Why Room to Read?

We chose Room to Read because they focus entirely on children's education — and they do it across South Asia.

📚 100% Focused on Education

Room to Read was founded in 2000 after its co-founder visited schools in Nepal and saw classrooms with almost no books. Since then, they've reached more than 50 million children in 28 countries, with a laser focus on literacy and girls' education.

Unlike bigger charities that spread donations across many causes, every dollar at Room to Read goes to one thing: helping kids learn to read and stay in school.

🏫 Working Across South Asia

Room to Read runs programs in four of the five countries we focus on — Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka — plus others across Asia and Africa. Their work includes:

  • Publishing children's books in local languages
  • Setting up school libraries with locally authored stories
  • Training teachers in effective reading instruction
  • Supporting girls through secondary school with mentoring and life skills classes
  • Working directly with governments to scale what works

💰 Where Your Money Goes

Room to Read is rated 4 stars by Charity Navigator for financial accountability. Here's what donations actually fund:

  • $50 — a year in the Literacy Program for one child
  • $250 — a year of secondary school for a girl, including mentoring
  • $1,000 — a year of coaching for a teacher
  • $2,500 — literacy learning packages for an entire school
  • $7,500 — a new school library stocked with books in students' native languages
